the good old cricket game pt2
Jul 8th, 2009 by JJ
As many of you will no doubt be aware the Ashes started today. Despite being many timezones removed, I was determined to be part of the experience and so was Sara. I booked the day off work and set my alarm for 3.30am intent to listen from start to finish via the magic of TMS over t’internet.
Before going to bed I arranged my computer and speakers in the bedroom to cut down on drowzy faffing about in the “morning”. As it was I’m not sure I actually slept at all before the alarm went off and I was soon getting Agger’s dulcet tones telling me that England had won the toss. I was just relieved to hear it wasn’t raining, that would not have been a good start to the day.
As it was it was a marvellous day. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to an entire day’s play before and it was great to be able to absorb the ebb and flow of the game without lifting a finger. I made occasional sorties to the kitchen for tea and bacon rolls but otherwise we could just lay there and let it wash over us (often the best way to appreciate cricket). As the sun rose in Calgary England were 90-3. We had breakfast during the Lunch interval and second breakfast during Tea. In between we could doze, cheer and catch up with anything we missed via the Guardian’s OBO. Everything was done and dusted by about 11.30am Mountain Time, which proved the perfect stimulus to go out for Brunch.
A three breakfast day. Proper job!
Paradise. Apart from KP’s insistence upon the inappropriate, premeditated sweep from somewhere in the region of Point, of course.
JJ - I’ve just belatedly read “Netherland” — have you read it? If not, heartily recommended. I was wary about being disappointed after all the accolades, but I do think it *is* the post-9/11 New York cricket novel we didn’t know we’d been waiting for….
Thanks Ian I shall look that one up
